One of the great things about Greenville is that you can easily find great art and history. One of the best places to find them together is at the Greenville County Museum of Art. It features American and specifically Southern artwork that you can’t find anywhere else.
From the Colonies until now, art has been a big part of American culture. At the the Museum of Art, artist of particular note come out and speak from years ago. They include Jasper Johns, David Drake and Helen Maria Turner, among others. You can see their work and learn about the incredible stories of their lives.
David Drake was a particularly inspiring artist. A potter, he was legally a slave and illegally illiterate in his time. He overcame those struggles to be one of the premier potters of his day. You can see his work in the Southern Collection at the Museum of Art.
